Dad's Story - Kenneth George Oakes

Our Dad's Story by Jenny Donoghue Kenneth George Oakes was the first-born son and second child born on the 23rd May 1901 to Mother, Clara (Neels) Father, William (Willum) John Oakes at Marengo, ( Murringo ) New South Wales. He had three brothers Alva Cosmos (Casey), Stan and Ron and six sisters; Dorothy, Mabel, Ella, Phyliss, Madge and Mary (Toppy). Kenneth George Oakes as a young man He attended Murringo Public School for his entire schooling. He passed his Qualifying Certificate exam in 1915. He was very proud to have been taught by Mr Ernest O’Reilly whose son Bill ( Famous Cricketer - Bill 'Tiger' O' Reilly ), was a classmate and friend. Ned, Ken & Eric 1917 - He began work as the telegram boy at Young Post Office. In 1918 The Young Witness ( Tuesday, September, 1918 ) reported he had passed exams and he was going on for further study with the GPO. John James Joseph Cummins by Ted Cummins John James Joseph Cummins - SN 2377 2nd Australian Infantry Battalion John James Joseph Cummins was born on the 8th August 1893, the eldest son of John Cummins and Mary Theresa Cahill of Marsden St, Burrowa. Referred to as Jack, he enlisted in the 1st Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 26th May 1915 Service Number 2377 and was posted to the 7th reinforcements of the 2nd Infantry Battalion in Holsworthy Army Camp, near Sydney. His attestment documentation listed him as 21 years 9 months of age, 5 foot 7 inches and 142 pounds, with blue eyes, medium complexion and dark brown hair. The 2nd Battalion was among the first infantry units raised for the AIF during the First World War. Like the 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions, the 2nd Battalion it was recruited from New South Wales and together these battalions, formed the 1st Brigade. Senior Constable Francis Drum from Marengo placed on the NSW Police Honour Roll

Commemoration of the Life of Senior Constable Francis Drum and his addition to the NSW Police Force Roll of Honour Friday the 29th of September is National Police Remembrance Day and for the people of Murringo, this day will forever hold extra special significance. One of our own, Senior Constable Francis Drum, was inducted today, onto the NSW Police Force Roll of Honour. Police Remembrance Day 2019 Commemoration Booklet Senior Constable Francis Drum # 86 As can be seen by his Service Number, Francis Drum was one of the very earliest recruits to the NSW Police. He had previously been a member in the Irish Constabulary. He was born 31st March 1838 in Ballyconnell, County Fermanagh, Ireland the son of Matthew and Susan Drum, he joined the ranks of the NSW Police on the 24th February 1862.
